The island of Bali in Indonesia is an amazing travel destination where you can find beautiful landscapes and temples, fresh and delicious foods, and a tranquil vibe that makes you feel at peace.
Top places to visit
Bali is a small island in Indonesia but is packed with so many beautiful places and amazing things to do. One place we highly recommend visiting is the Lempuyang Temple. It is about a two-hour drive from Denpasar, which is the main city in Bali. At this temple you have so many things to explore, but the highlight is the “Gate of Heaven” at the top. This gate overlooks the mountains on a clear day. It makes for some amazing pictures and memories. We recommend getting there as early as possible to get a parking spot and avoid the long line. Also, be prepared to wear a skirt/kilt as that is required to enter the temple area.
Another temple worth visiting is the Ulun Danu Temple. This temple is about 90 minutes from Denpasar by car. The temple is beautifully set on a lake with flowers and plants everywhere. There is also a botanical garden nearby.
If you go to Bali then you have to go to Ubud. It is located about 50 minutes from Denpasar in the center of Bali. In our opinion, it is the nicest and most tranquil place in all of Bali. In Ubud, you can find waterfalls, rice terraces, cute shops and restaurants, and more.
Another place that we loved while visiting Bali was Seminyak. It is located about thirty minutes from Denpasar and has become a hipster haven with eco-restaurants, a nice beach, and is way less crowded than Kuta or Denpasar. We just loved exploring Seminyak and stopping at lots of little restaurants and shops. At the end of the day we watched the sunset at the beach.
If you have traveled all the way to Bali, then hopefully you are willing to travel just a little further. The small island of Nusa Penida has some impressive things that you don’t want to miss. You can take a short ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida. The first place on Nusa Penida that you need to visit is Kellingking beach, which is also called the T-Rex beach because well… you’ll see. This is just a magical place, but make sure you are careful both on the stairs and if you go down to the beach. The roads on Nusa Penida are not very good, so we recommend hiring a driver to go visit Kellingking beach and a few other places.
We also recommend you visit Diamond Beach while on Nusa Penida. Try to get to Diamond Beach early to avoid the crowds. We went there for the sunrise and had an amazing time just enjoying the view. It is called Diamond beach because the massive rock in the water is shaped like a diamond.
Broken beach is another place you need to go while on the Island of Nusa Penida. It is a natural bridge area that you can walk across. It is an area that is known for very powerful waves, so be careful and enjoy the view from a safe distance from the water.
Our experience
Overall, we spent about two weeks in Bali and loved every second of it. It was one of the highlights of our Southeast Asian summer trip and a place we would recommend to everyone as it is safe, cheap, beautiful, and so relaxing. If you go to Bali make sure you leave yourself enough time to visit Nusa Penida as well.
